Recently, I was asked to write a letter to be sealed up in a time capsule for a new born baby in my family. Knowing it would be a couple of decades from now before he’d open it as an adult, I figured the letter could be one of love and best wishes and/or advice that would come from my heart and many years of experience on this earth. Also, not knowing if I might still be here in a couple of decades (who really knows anyway), I wanted to assure him I’d either be here, or I would be watching over him – all while keeping the letter positive. And I figured I’d better type it rather than write it in cursive. (After all, who knows if cursive will have become a secret language by then!)
As I started, I felt a strong sense of support from my late husband in spirit, whose work and life ethics, positive personality, and sense of right and wrong helped me form my own internal guidance system for over 54 years together. I always admired him for having that as his unwavering compass! With all of that in my mind, my letter turned out easier to write than I had thought. All I had to do was to think what I stood for, what my husband stood for, what would be the perfect life outcome for this new person in my mind, and then wish that for his legacy. (You might want to put together your own letter describing your personnal life philosophy. It was fun!) Here were the wishes in my Letter of Love.
“First of all, I just want to say that I will continue to love and watch over you forever and ever, so you can always hold that knowing in your heart. Also, I feel so happy you’ve been blessed with such good, loving parents to give you the basics for becoming a well-loved, good, and successful man.
My hopes for you are that you follow that inner voice that reminds you that you can be great at whatever you decide to do. I believe you will make a difference in this world as an example of kindness, generosity, compassion, hard work, and success (however you define that.)
I hope you’ll have the humility to share this world with others fairly and with great care, while embracing the wonders along the way. I hope you can always feel grateful for your close friends and family. Remember to have fun, keep your sense of humor, smile and laugh with others often. Afterall, happiness is the true lubricant of life!
Last, but not least, remember to work for progress over perfection, accept the bumps in the road as good life lessons, value people over things, and believe in yourself as a child of God…perfect, whole, and complete (because you are.)
From the deepest part of me, I hope you make a wonderfully happy and healthy life!
Always know I love you beyond your imagination, and I will continue to love you and watch over you forever and ever so you can hold that knowing in your heart as you travel along your life’s journey.”
